Anxiety is a word difficult to define because it has so many different applications. People become ‘anxious’ before tests, or when the boss asks for a meeting, or when the mother-in-law is coming to visit, or just before a first date. In most cases we recognise the anxiety, accept it as part of life, probably even expect to feel it and then just go on.
But for some, anxiety is a much more serious problem. It creates sleepless nights, difficulty breathing, panic attacks, stomach problems, ulcers and so on. It can be so overwhelming that it prevents one’s ability to function in daily life.
There are many possible reasons for anxiety. Some are physical and will need the attentions of a doctor. Many, however, are emotional. They create feelings of powerlessness, lack of control, inability to cope with life situations. They sap your energy and make it difficult to face the day.
There are two ways to treat anxiety. The first is to teach coping strategies - relaxation and visualisation. The second is to uncover the root cause of the anxiety and to alleviate it. This cause may be related to present day issues, but often it is found in the past, in unremembered and seemingly unrelated events of childhood.
It would be wonderful to feel that we all had the inner resources necessary to deal with life’s problems, and the truth is that we do. Sometimes, however, we need a little help finding and utilising these resources.
